Why bottled water is such a waste!
For starters, 1.5 million barrels of oil in the US are used to make water bottles from polyethylene terephthalate each year. Not to mention that 86% of those bottles created are sent to landfills or incinerated serving no long term purpose and destroying our environment. Many times, bottled water is manufactured and shipped long distances, like the 1.4 million bottles of Finnish tap water sent to Saudi Arabia or the importing of the popular Fiji water by the US and Canada. Demand for bottled water has been increasing even in areas where tap water is safe to drink. The increase in demand causes the production of unnecessary garbage and consumes vast amounts of energy. Although the bottled water is often no healthier than tap water, it can cost up to 10,000 times more. Tap water comes to us through an energy-efficient infrastructure whereas bottled water must be transported long distances leading to increased polution, which damages the environment. Nearly one-fourth of all bottled water crosses national borders by boats, trains, airplanes, and trucks. The long distance transportation involves burning massive quantities of fossil fuels so now is the time to buy the alternative to bottled water. Filtered water bottles give you the convenience you desire while being more affordable and more environmentally friendly.
