The science behind drinking water

There seems to be a large amount of advice about the proper amount of water that each person should drink during the day. In most cases is it recommended we all drink about 8 - 8oz glasses. However, only YOU know the amount that keeps you running at your best. Listen to yourself.

While you listen, keep this in mind:

About 70% of your body is water and the only element more important is oxygen. Every part of our bodies from skin to our brain relies on ample hydration to function properly. Here are the specific results of drinking water as it relates to different parts of your body.

Water sends nutrients to your Brain. 85% of the brain is the water that helps feed and cushion it.

Water regulates body temperature. Water created perspiration and allows us to release excess heat to cool our bodies. You may need water when you are overheated and not perspiring.

Water aids in digestion. Digestion of solid foods can only happen with the aid of large amounts of water.

Water keeps skin clear and healthy. Water keeps our skin smooth and healthy.

Water cushions and lubricates bones and joints. Water acts as a lubricant between bones. It also lubricates cartilage and helps the joints glide freely.

Water helps maintain muscle tone. Muscles are composed mainly of water. Water helps keep you strong and removes waste from the muscle cells. It also carries nutrients to the cells and can aid in decreasing recovery time.

Water metabolizes fat. Correct amounts of water daily help your kidneys and liver function efficiently and thereby reducing the amount of fat deposits in the body. The kidneys rely on a lot of water to remove toxins, waste, and salt from the blood. If you do not get enough water, the liver takes over some of the work of the kidneys and therefore is not able to correctly metabolize excess fat.

Water transports nutrients to and removes toxins and waste from the body.
