Water Bottle Filters

Monday, June 9th, 2008

We all know that tap water is bad.  It smells it is harsh on our outer appearance and also the inner side of the bodies.  Tap water has chlorine, to parasites, to lead, and all kinds of contaminants.  It has been researched there are over 2,200 contaminants in tap water.  Yuck all that is going straight into our body.  And we thought water was good for us well not tap water.  But what is an easy convenient and cost efficient way to drink water but not the harmful contaminants with it?  Well there is a solution!  It is called a water bottle filter.  Basically what you do it put tap water in you water bottle from the sink to the water fountain at the park.  Put the top on and while you squeeze the water out of the spout the filter attached to the top will filter out all of the contaminants and smells.  You can take this sports water bottled filter anywhere and use it.  It is easy to use and doesn’t take up much room.  To where if you drink bottled water you have to stop buy it and then go on your way.  Then later you will have to dispose of the bottle, which is not good for the planet.  After that you might be thirsty again and have to go through that whole process again.  While if you had the water bottle filter you can refill as you go. Not buying lots of bottled water and not throwing away the bottles.  So when using a sports water bottle filter you save in the pockets well helping the planet that we live on and of course getting fresh water every time

Bottled Water talked about often

Monday, August 6th, 2007

You may see lots of blarticles (blog+articles) detailing why bottled water is bad or why you shouldn’t drink it. Here is a perfect example why bottled water is talked about so much!

Bottled water is often misleading but most people don’t think anything of it. Until now, water sellers have come under fire from corporate accountability groups for misleading the public (YOU!) into beliving their water comes from natural springs…

Many bottled water drinkers have suspected bottled water to be filtered tap water, but no one knew for sure. Rest assured this won’t be the case any more! Companies like PepsiCO (Aquafina), Coca-Cola Co. (Dasani), Nestle Waters North America (Nestle Pure Life purified drinking water) have all been pressed to label their products properly. These companies all filter regular municipal water, bottle it, and sell it to the unsuspecting consumer.

Don’t continue to be fooled into funding this $11 billion bottled water industry. If you don’t like the taste of your water buy something worthwhile! Like a personal filtration system. There are tons of them out there that are more affordable and more convenient than bottled water! Try a filtered bottle and other water filter products and see for yourself! They provide the same great taste but are more affordable and more convenient!

San Francisco says ‘NO’ to bottled water

Monday, July 9th, 2007

According to a Scholastic News article found here, the Mayor of San Francisco has banned the use of government money to buy bottled water. This is the first of possibly many huge blows to the bottled water industry as a whole. It just takes a few to get the ball rolling, and others will step into place. Standards like this are a huge help to the environment and savings of energy. While the only option may be less-than-great-tasting tap water, at least filtering your water with water filters and other filtered water bottles makes this option a great one.

Shower Filters, What am I looking for?

Monday, February 19th, 2007

As shower filters and shower filter technology have advanced and changed frequently in the last 2 years, it is becoming difficult to keep up with what is the best filter technology and what we need to be concerned with. It seems when one test is completed, a new one is on the market.

KDF: This is by far the most popular and most capable filtering element in shower filter technology. It is widely accepted to be an excellent and long lasting filtration media for shower filter elements. While this filter media is considered excellent for removal of all types of chlorine, it is better at free chlorine neutralization.

GAC: Granular activated carbon is typically used for drinking filters and low-flow filters. There have been many manufactures that attempt to use this in shower filters. All studies indicate it does a poor job. The filter media does not last very long, and it spits out a black ooze which must be immediately cleaned. This filter element has varying filtering ability depending on water quality and water temperature.

Chlorgon: This is a combination of calcium sulfite with a ceramic binder. This has turned out to be a huge surprise in the shower filter market. This filter media, when combined with KDF has an amazing ability to reduce combined chlorine. Shower filters with this element are more difficult to find because the chemical makeup of chlorgon is proprietary and patented. Make sure your shower filter has this element.

Minerals, PI, Special Blend, Ceramics: These are all useless. Mostly they are used as add-on sales and marketing ploys. No filters that use these types of materials test very well at all.

Check with your shower filter company and make sure you are getting the best filter available, your skin and body will thank you.

Is Iron in Drinking Water Dangerous?

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Iron in Tap Water is considered more of an aesthetic contaminant, affecting the taste and appearance, rather than producing any detrimental health effect. Soluble (or “clear water”) iron manifests when a glass of water is allowed to stand, and reddish brown particles will appear in the glass and eventually settle to the bottom. Insoluble iron can be seen as red or yellow color as soon as it is poured into the glass.

Iron presents one additional challenge as certain bacteria actually consume it, leaving a reddish brown or yellow slime that can clog plumbing and cause an offensive odor. You may notice this slime or sludge in your toilet tank when you remove the lid. The approach to solving an iron problem will depend on whether it is soluble or insoluble, and may include aeration, filtration, ion exchange, and the addition of sequestering agents.

If you suspect problems with Iron, make sure you check with your local water utility and a water professional. If you have no noticeable problems, there may still be something lurking in your water you don’t see. Make sure you are using your water filters and water filter system wherever you go. Nothing is more basic than pure, safe drinking water.

Magnetic Water

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

As you may know magnets have two poles North and South. The cells in our bodies can be considered small magnetic units because each produce their own magnetic fields. A disorder can generally be found when there is a disturbance of the magnetic field.

The way magnets alter the water is through speeding up the process of sedimentation. They increase conductivity and the ionization process which then creates electrically charged particles. This exposure to magnets changes the weight of water by creating more hydroxyl (OH-) ions. The hydroxyl ions form calcium bicarbonate and other alkaline molecules which reduce the acidity and increase the pH. Acidic water is dangerous because it is more susceptible to increased levels of lead or mercury. Magnetic water therefore increases the pH and creates more “Healthy Water.”

Normally water has a pH level of 6 or 7 whereas magnetized water has been known to reach in upwards of 9 pH after being exposed to 7,000 gauss strength magnets for a long period of time. By using a water filter magnet, especially one that utilizes 17,000 gauss magnets, you can increase the water pH faster over a shorter period of time.

Dirty Tap Water could put pregnant women at risk

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Milllions of Americans have been drinking tap water contaminated with chemical byproducts from chlorine that are far more than what studies suggest may be safe for pregnant woman, two environmental groups say in a new study.

Chlorine is commonly used to disinfect drinking water.  When it is added to water that contains organic matter such as runoff from farms or lawns, it can form compounds such as chloroform or chloromine that can cause illnesses.

“By failing to clean up rivers and reservoirs that provide drinking water for hundreds of millions of Americans, EPA and the Congress have forced water utilities to chlorinate water that is contaminated with animal waste, sewage, fertilizer, algae and sediment” accoridng to the USEPA.

The Environmental Health Department cautioned that the link between the byproducts and pregnancy risks is suggestive, but not conclusive.. Still, if the pregnancy studies are proved, millions could be at risk.

EPA studies showed that reducing the level of trihalomethanes might mean 2,332 fewer cases of bladder cancer per year.

To reduce the risks, the Federal Government should provide billions of dollars more for cleaning up sources of contaminated water and providing more areas that can filter potential contaminents from farmland and urban areas.

Currently,  filtered water bottles, and other water filters are the only way to ensure our safety and our health.

Natural ‘Spring’ Water or Reconstituted Tap Water?

Friday, January 5th, 2007

Recent allegations against the Coca-Cola Company and its brand name of bottled water, Dasani, have publicly highlighted one of the biggest misconceptions about the quality of bottled water. Coca-Cola, advertising its bottled water as “pure, still water,” is now being investigated for misleading consumers about the true nature of the contents of its bottles. Rather than deriving its water from natural springs, Coca-Cola had actually been filling its Dasani bottles with purified tap water.

Of course, this problem of reconstituted tap water in Dasani bottles would not be so large if it was an isolated incident. Unfortunately, the process of bottling tap water is not limited to the Coca-Cola Company. In 1999, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) published the results of a four-year study in which researchers tested more than 1,000 samples of 103 brands of bottled water. These researchers found that,

“An estimated 25 percent or more of bottled water is really just tap water in a bottle—sometimes further treated, sometimes not.”

In one case, a brand of bottled water, advertised as “pure, glacier water,” was found to be taken from a municipal water supply while another brand, flaunted as “spring water,” was pumped from a water source next to a hazardous waste dumping site. While “purified tap water” can be  safer than untreated tap water (depending upon the purification methods), a consumer should expect to receive something more than reconstituted tap water for the exceptional prices of bottled water.

If bottled water does not necessarily offer purer water than tap water, surely it provides a better tasting water product, right? The answer to this question is no. Bottled water does not always taste better than tap water.

In an interesting study conducted by Showtime television, the hosts found that 75% of tested New York City residents actually preferred tap water over bottled water in a blind taste test.

This study shows that bottled water essentially holds nothing over tap water. In many cases, bottled water is no purer than tap water, and it may not even taste better. Why not filter the water yourself? Shouldn’t it be a standard to carry a water filter bottle or some sort of portable water filter with you wherever you go? If it’s so simple, why is it not the standard?
